Blowing Rock isn't the only town in the high country to visit for Winterfest. The high country tradition of a mid-winter festival will also be celebrated once again this year at Ski Beech in Beech Mountain, with hilarious contests and games, great food, and live music all day long and well into the evenings. It's a great way to beat back those winter blahs, and celebrate the snow, ice and cold up on Beech Mountain.
The festivities officially begin on the Friday night with a Speed Ball Pool Tournament at Jackalope's View restaurant, followed by an evening of live music at the Beech Tree Bar and Grille. Flitting from one Winterfest event to the other will be easy, with a shuttle service running all weekend long.
Saturday morning begins with the revival of a longstanding Beech mountain tradition: the Bathing Beauty Contest, during which both male and female contestants must ski or snowboard, and be judged for beauty, poise, outrageousness and originality. This, against a backdrop of fragrant smells from the cookout on the View Haus deck, the down-home sounds of a live bluegrass band, and the laughter of kids getting their faces painted and horsing around on the inflatables at Beech Tree Village, should make for a full day of frivolities for all ages.
Late Saturday afternoon and into the evening brings festival goers more music, in the form of Village Rail Jam, followed by the Shane Pruitt Band's bluesy southern rock sounds (Some of the band members once played with the Allman Brothers and the Steve Miller Bands.) at the Beech Tree Bar and Grille.
Festival events continue into Sunday with The Great Cardboard Box Derby. (The judging will be in the morning, with the actual race scheduled for after lunch.) Also spectators will be treated to an additional thrill on Sunday, with the opportunity to witness, first-hand, the fierce competition among area High Country Restaurants in the Waiter/Waitress Ski Race. (Skiing or snowboarding, while balancing a tray of beverages, is no mean feat.) And lest attendees forget their own ambitions in the pursuit of snow sports, late afternoon will feature a Ski Beech Sports Fashion Show, plus Ski and Snowboard demonstrations going on throughout the day.
So, the weekend of January 23rd through 25th, 2009, the folks at Ski Beech Resort are pulling out all the stops to celebrate the winter season in the North Carolina high country. Come on up and help us make Winterfest 2009 an event to remember!
