Folks on the mountain will be taking a brief hiatus from relaxing during the lazy days of summer, as Beech Mountain Parks & Recreation and the Town of Beech Mountain host the 2nd annual A Cool 5 Race and 1.5-mile Fun Run on Saturday, June 6, at 9:00 a.m. With average summer temperatures that hover in the low to mid-70's, together with its beautiful and challenging terrain, Beech Mountain is an ideal place for any outdoor athletic event like a race, sparing participants and onlookers the unwelcome burden of Southern summers' high temperatures and humidity. Indeed, the mountain has long been a popular NC high-altitude training destination for competitors in many sports, most notably Lance Armstrong of cycling fame. And its natural advantages will again be appreciated once again in 2009 by those who come this June to participate in the 5-mile run, and also the 1.5-mile fun run (which is open to runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels).
This year, proceeds from the race will be put to work towards the construction of a new community playground outside the town's state-of-the-art Recreation Center at Buckeye Lake. Local vendors will also contribute to the cause by making special incentives and packages available to Race participants and their families.
