Kite Flying Festival on Mile High Beech Mountain, NC

One of our absolutely favorite warm-weather activities up on Beech Mountain is the Mile-High Kite Festival.  Held every year on Labor Day weekend, it is a splendid way to spend the day with the family.

We always try to get there first thing in the morning, because the first 200 kids to turn up get a free kite to decorate and fly.  Here is an excellent video on YouTube about the festival.  But, trust me, it is definitely something you will enjoy!  The event is free of charge.

This year, it'll be held on September 4th (Sunday), and begins at 10 a.m.

For additional information call the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce at (828) 387-9283.

Five Out of Five Dorothy's Agree: There's No Place Like Beech Mountain!

Beech Mountain, NC, was home to the original Land of Oz Park from 1970 until it closed more than 20 years ago.   But for one weekend every Fall, lovers of OZ and the old theme park gather at its grounds on the top of Beech Mountain, to re-live happy memories and the magic of OZ.  And this year, on August 5-7, the park will come alive one other weekend, as members of The International Wizard of Oz Club will hold their National Oz Convention in nearby Banner Elk.

The OZ Club was founded in 1957 by a 13 year old boy, and has since grown into a 501(c)3 educational organization with a growing number of members from all over the world, united by a love of all things OZ.

Convention attendees will enjoy documentaries, exhibits, members of the original costumed cast and live performances of songs from the early shows, as well as opportunities to show off their own collections of memorabilia and collectibles. Members will later follow the Yellow Brick Road during a private, behind-the scenes tour of the Park’s collection of original artifacts – including screen-used costumes from the classic MGM film.

So slip on your ruby slippers, grab Toto, and join the fun!  Further details about the event may be found online at the International Wizard of OZ Club site.

2011 Highland Games - July 7-10th

Well, it's nearly time for the Annual Highland Games on Grandfather Mountain!  This year, they will be held July 7th thru the 10th on Grandfather Mountain.  As in years past, there are tons of things for folks to come and enjoy (whether you're of Scottish descent or not):  sheep herding, and entertainment for the kids, many different musicians and fantastic concerts of Celtic-inspired bands, and competitions for everything from Highland dance to wrestling.  For a better idea of what goes on at the Highland Games, you can read my past posts about previous years, and also be sure visit the official website of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering O' Scottish Clans at www.gmhg.org for more details of what's on offer for 2011.
